Pierre steps forward to talk to Cassie as the only one of the ghosts who speak English. They know that she is a spirit but not one like them. He's hoping that she is a powerful witch or goddess who can help them exact revenge on their torturers who murdered them. Cassie just wants help finding a way out of the Castle with Francoise. That is when a younger-looking ghost steps forward—Pierre translates that Etienne knows of a way out and will guide them. He and the horde stay behind.
When Cassie returns with Mircea to rescue Radu and Louis, Cassie (in a borrowed woman's body) seeks out the swarm of ghosts she encountered before. She asks them to hide her while her other spirit-form passes with Tomas carrying Francoise. Pierre materializes and she recruits them for her mission to stop Rasputin promising them revenge.
